VAL STALLATA – CENGIA GABRIELLA

Croda of Tonis - Popera

After crossing the lower Giralba valley as far as Pian de la Salere (1365 m) the route turns right to the remote entrance to the Stallata valley. It then climbs sharply through a dwarf mountain pine forest and rocks on the left bank of the valley (metal cables) past the rocky bastions which close off the Ciadin de Stallata mountains on the edge of which Bivacco Battaglio Cadore (2250 m) is located. Having climbed 200 metres up Mt. Ciadin once again the route turns left to the rock face and pinnacles leading to Cengia Gabriella which crosses the whole southern slope of Monte Giralba di Sotto. Equipped with metal cables and steps, the ledge is wide and straightforward in sections, more challenging in others and leads to the Alta Val Giralba slopes. The views over the huge east face of Croda dei Toni are splendid. Having descended across unchallenging rocks and then a gorge which is often icy, the footpath then climbs up the Giralba valley once more in around half an hour’s walk to Rifugio Carducci (2297 m).
